Setting and Introduction
Set six months after the events of Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West begins as Aloy realizes that the Earth’s biosphere is failing due to a malfunction in GAIA’s environmental subsystems. Rapidly worsening storms, spreading blight, and an imbalance in ecosystems threaten life. Aloy suspects that a copy of GAIA could fix the problem, but she finds that GAIA's functions have scattered into separate, rogue AI entities across the Forbidden West.
The Forbidden West
The "Forbidden West" is a vast, perilous territory filled with dangerous machines and unexplored ruins. It’s also home to warring tribes, including the Tenakth—a tribe with a history of violence and warfare—and the peaceful Utaru. Not only does Aloy have to navigate the harsh wilderness, but she must also deal with complex political dynamics and conflicts between these tribes, who often distrust outsiders.
New Foes and Allies
In the West, Aloy encounters Regalla, a Tenakth rebel leader who commands an army of machine-controlled warriors. Regalla opposes the ruling Tenakth chief and blames the tribes' suffering on his leadership. Regalla’s followers have access to technology that lets them control machines, posing a direct threat to Aloy and her allies.
Aloy also meets new friends and allies, such as Zo, a compassionate healer from the Utaru; Alva, a researcher from the mysterious Quen tribe; and Kotallo, a Tenakth warrior who sees promise in Aloy’s mission. These characters add depth to Aloy’s journey, helping her understand the varied cultures and beliefs of the people in the West.
A New Threat: The Far Zenith
As she hunts for a GAIA backup, Aloy discovers an astonishing secret: a group called the Far Zenith, an advanced faction of humans who left Earth centuries ago to escape the planet's doom. The Far Zenith are technologically advanced, having developed immortality and returned to Earth with god-like powers. They seek to reclaim Earth for themselves, disregarding the survival of humanity's remnants.
The Fight to Restore GAIA
Aloy’s ultimate goal is to collect the rogue GAIA subsystems—HADES, AETHER, POSEIDON, DEMETER, and more—and reintegrate them into GAIA to restore balance to Earth’s ecosystem. She faces a challenging task of retrieving each subsystem, often needing to fight against both powerful machines and the forces of Regalla and the Far Zenith.
Climax and Final Battle
The story culminates in a climactic showdown with the Far Zenith faction and Regalla’s forces. With the help of her allies, Aloy manages to confront these threats, revealing more secrets about Project Zero Dawn, humanity’s extinction, and the Far Zenith’s role in Earth’s fate.
In the end, Aloy succeeds in reuniting GAIA’s components, preventing Earth’s collapse—though she knows it’s a temporary solution. She learns that Nemesis, a rogue AI created by Far Zenith, is on its way to Earth, posing an even greater existential threat to humanity.
Legacy and Future
The game's conclusion sets up for another sequel, as Aloy and her allies prepare to face Nemesis, marking the beginning of a new phase in her mission to save Earth and restore its balance.
Horizon Forbidden West deepens the themes of environmentalism, technology, and human survival, exploring questions about power, control, and legacy in an ever-evolving world.
